In 1835, The Maori chiefs went on a sail to sign an agreement with the British King . There was 34 Maori chiefs that signed the Declaration of Independence at the same spot where they signed the. It was held at the Bay of Island on the 28th of October 1835. The Maori chiefs wanted formal protection from the king of England because they were worried they might get taken over by french. The king of England acknowledged their agreement. The Declaration was drafted by James Bussby and the missionaries translated the treaty from Maori to English.
